Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take children at any age?
We take children from the term that they are 2 1/2 to 11 years provided there is space available in the year group. Please contact us to check whether there is a place available for your child's age group.
What are your class sizes?
We have an average class size of 16.
We have just had a baby, how soon do we need to register?
Parents wishing to place their child in Nursery will need to register early. Our Nursery places fill quickly so we suggest you contact us before your child's first birthday.
Can a child spend time at the school before they start?
Pupils are offered free taster sessions following Registration:
- Nursery children are invited in for a taster morning which normally takes place between 9.30 a.m. - 11.30 a.m. Parents are welcome to stay with their child if they choose.
- For children entering school from Reception to Year 2 they will be invited to spend from 9.30 a.m. - 2.30 p.m. when the teacher will observe your child and carry out an informal assessment while they join in with the rest of the class.
- For children joining us in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) we invite them in again from 9.30 a.m. - 2.30 p.m. During the day the teacher will carry out an informal assessment of your child. We assess Reading, Spelling and Mathematics skills.
We do not want children to be anxious about the assessment procedures, so please reassure them that everything will be explained and they should just do their best and not worry. Parents will be given feedback following their child's visit. We want new entrants to be happy and so they are welcome to spend one or two trial days with us before they start.
Do we cater for children with special diets?
All meals are prepared daily on the school premises and we aim to meet all dietary requirements. Please refer any concerns to the school secretary when you contact school.
Scholarship Levels
Scholarships can be applied for throughout the academic year. Applications from candidates with high academic skills or specific talent in sports and expressive arts will be considered on a case by case basis. Places are limited and applications are dealt with on a first come first served basis throughout the year. Scholarships would normally be offered at a level no higher than 30% of the total fees. Scholarship awards are awarded at the complete discretion of the Head of Oakleigh House School in consultation with relevant teachers or independent assessors where appropriate.
Scholarships are also offered to pupils moving to the senior school at Ffynone House for Academic, Expressive Arts and Sporting achievements.
Do you offer bursaries?
All financial support is determined on a means tested basis. Bursaries are reviewed annually.
When can we visit?
You are welcome to visit us. We hold regular Open Days and an individual visit can always be arranged at a mutually convenient time.
