Curriculum at Oakleigh House School

We recognise that learning is a lifelong experience, that both adults and children learn new things every day.  At Oakleigh House School we believe that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.  Through our teaching we hope to equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to exercise self-discipline and make informed choices.

We are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, informed by National policies and trends but reflecting, at the same time, the particular abilities, aptitudes and aspirations of our own pupils. We aim to ensure that all pupils have equal access to the curriculum and that the quality of their learning experiences leads to a consistently high level of involvement and achievement.

We place considerable emphasis on the development of basic skills in language, literacy, numeracy and ICT. The wider curriculum is designed not only to support the development of the children's academic abilities but also their creative, aesthetic, physical, moral and social growth in addition to fostering an interest in the world around them and sparking a love of learning.

There is considerable interaction with the community as frequent visitors come into school to share their expertise. We believe that learning doesn't just take place within the classroom and a variety of trips to places of interest are organised for each year group throughout the year. For details of forthcoming trips and expeditions, have a look at our calendar.

Sport plays a prominent part in school life with a wide range of sports being taught, football, hockey, tennis, cricket, rounders, netball, athletics and swimming. The aim is that every pupil should enjoy taking part and in so doing build up a real sense of team work, while at the same time providing the support and challenge necessary to fulfil individual talents.

The Expressive Arts have always been an important part of the curriculum at Oakleigh House, with specialist teaching in Art, Music and Drama.  There is a thriving choir and young orchestra, a summer concert for the older pupils and a Christmas production which involves every pupil in the school.
